The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division Nigerian Army, Enugu, Maj Gen Adamu Buba Abubakar weekend insisted that the recent Python Dance and Crocodile Smile operations carried out in the South East and South south by the army has led to a reduction of militancy especially pipeline vandalism, as well as taming of kidnappers and other criminals.
General Abubakar, who stated this during the West African Social Activities (WASA) held at the parade ground of 82 Division, Enugu, disclosed that the various military operations were aimed at boosting internal security and rid the society of hoodlums, for the benefit of law abiding citizens.
According to him, the ongoing dialogue between the federal government and representatives of Niger Delta militants, as well as the peaceful celebration of yuletide devoid of kidnapping and other violent crimes as witnessed in the South East were some of the results of the operations.
He averred that with improved security in the country, especially with the defeat of Boko Haram insurgency in the north east, the military were poised to reintroduce suspended social activities such as sports festivals and commanding officers workshop.
While advising officers and men of the division to remain committed to their duties, he expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai for his support to the Division.
He assured that the military would continue to treat the welfare of officers and men and their families with top priority and appealed to widows of deceased soldiers to prepare to vacate the barracks as soon as their entitlements are paid.
He explained that WASA is an annual event in the Nigerian Army where officers, soldiers, their families and friends socially interact in a relaxed atmosphere.
“The event is conducted to mark the end of an eventful year and to herald the beginning of a new year. In this vein, this WASA is for the year 2016.”
Some of the activities which took place at the occasion include traditional dancer from selected cultural groups of Nigeria to showcase the diverse rich cultural heritage of the country, tug of war between female soldiers, and comedy show. Ends
