The 2018 World Cup in Russia draw begins. The tournament draw is held at a star-studded ceremony in the Kremlin UPDATES: FIFA President Gianni Infantino takes the stage to welcome everyone: "Thank you to all the Russian people who have worked hard over the last seven years to bring us one step further to the final tournament. Thanks to all 11 Host Cities who are doing a tremendous job." President Vladimir Putin just made his address. Putin: "The draw will give us a chance to recognise the names of the best footballing teams of winning the World Cup, the most coveted trophy will be won by the team showing the most resilience. I would like to wish success to all the teams and I call upon all loyal fans to come to Russia and enjoy the finals of 2018."
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is in Moscow for the draw, which will be conducted by ex-England striker Gary Lineker, at the State Kremlin Palace. England will be seeded and will not play Spain in the group stage. "This is going to be a really exciting period," said Southgate. "From our point of view, the draw is the next stage of being able to plan properly." A tough scenario would see England drawn in the same group as five-time winners Brazil, seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt, and Serbia. An easier draw, on paper, would see them in a group with Poland, Iran and Panama. "We have a plan in place that will trigger as soon as that draw is made," added Southgate. "Not only will we know who our group stage opponents are but also who we might face further d...
Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr says he is calm ahead of Friday’s Final Draw for the 21st FIFA World Cup finals as his team has no fear of any team. According to a statement by the Communications Department of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Thursday, Rohr spoke from the Crowne Plaza World Trade Centre in Moscow. It quoted him as speaking in the morning after he landed in the Russian capital for the showpiece event. “There is no weak squad in the 32-team field, and anyone hoping to play so-called `average teams’ in the group phase is only guilty of wishful thinking. “All the teams that are in the Final Draw, except host nation Russia, played qualifying matches. They all emerged from tough encounters and, therefore, none can be tagged `weak’.
The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) says Nigeria paraded the youngest players during the qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. A letter from football's world governing body says it will take further action, including a possible global suspension, if the deadline is not met. The NSC is yet to respond to the ultimatum set by Fifa. On 10 November the NSC suspended the leadership of The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) amid allegations of fraud. "The suspension is to enable the investigation team to do the investigation without interference from the suspended GFF officials," the NSC said at the time. In response the GFF denied any wrongdoing and refused to recognise the sanctions. "Up to date, neither the GFF General Assembly nor Fifa has ever discovered or raised any act of financial fraud by the GFF leadership," a statement read. The latest letter from Fifa's secretary general Fatma Samoura say

Nigeria will be paid a total of $12.5 million by FIFA for qualifying for Russia 2018 with $2.5 million of this amount paid for the Eagles to prepare adequately for the football showpiece. They will earn more cash should they reach the knockout rounds of the tournament as they have done in 1994 and 2014. Nigeria have so far used a total of 37 players for the qualifying tournament for Russia 2018 and they are all entitled to a share of a qualification bonus. Rohr, a 64-year-old Franco-German coach, said he believes that with a fully prepared and united team both on and off the pitch, Nigeria can expect their best performance at next year’s tournament. “If we want to do something at the World Cup, we have to prepare well,” he said. “We want everybody who wants to be part of the
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing another FIFA rap, after five people were confirmed dead and many others sustained various degrees of injuries, following a stampede at the entrance of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, on Saturday. The incident happened while football fans were trying to enter the stadium during the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia. They were allegedly beaten by soldiers at the gates with heavy sticks. Before the game in Uyo, FIFA fined Nigeria 30,000 Swiss Francs (N11,049,557), after fans invaded the same pitch during a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon on September 1. According to the information on the FIFA website, the action violated article 65 and 67 of the FBC FIFA stadium and security regulations. Nigeria was...
