Nigerian Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, said that the Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi will return to his familiar role as holding midfielder, following his not too impressive contribution as a support striker during the defeat to Croatia in their first game of the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Rohr is expected to effect this change in his team as they file out against European newcomers, Iceland in Volgograd in a game many analysts believe they should win.
The super Eagle’s Captain’s role in the Eagles last game has been heavily criticised by his former boss at Chelsea Jose Mourinho who converted him to a holding midfielder in his days at the Stamford Bridge side.
Also former Nigerian captain Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha was not impressed with the role the Tianjin Teda player was given in that ill-fated game.
On his part, Mikel said he wants to lead the team beyond the group stages said he is ready to do anything that will revive their World Cup campaign after the disappointing 2-0 loss to Croatia.
Many analysts were surprised that the gifted midfielder was played upfront as a support striker while his team lacked the ability to win the midfield battle against the Eastern European side last Saturday
