Senate Summons IGP Over Melaye, Killings

The IGP is to brief the lawmakers on the arrest of the Senator representing the Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye. This comes after the Senator was held in detention on Monday by immigration officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport preventing him from travelling to Morocco. He was on Tuesday arrested by men of the IGP’s monitoring team and was being conveyed to Lokoja when he reportedly jumped out of the moving police vehicle. The lawmaker has since been rushed to Zankli hospital in Mabushi district of Abuja and later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the National Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. According to the new schedule released this evening and signed by the electoral commission’s secretary Augusta Ogakwu, INEC is expected to give the notice of recall as stipulated by law on the 27th of March 2018 while the verification exercise will hold on the 28th of April. The outcome of the verification will be released on the following day, the 29th Of April 2018. Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has described as sacrilege the killings of Christians in a Catholic Church in Benue State by suspected herdsmen on Tuesday. Switzerland said it has returned all the money kept in the country by late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, with $1.5 million interest. Amb. Pio Wennubst, Assistant Director-General and Head, Global Cooperation Department, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, told the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria in New York. Wennubst said Switzerland returned about $322.5 million(N116.11 billion) to the Federal Government. According to him, the original amount was $321 million.
